The new Panasonic AG-AF100 will usher in a new era of low-cost cameras providing high-quality output.
DSLRs have radically changed the prosumer video market for good. Who gets excited about a camera with a 1/2″ chip anymore? Remember the Sony EX1 that came to us in late 2007?
Panasonic’s new AG-AF100 now sports a 4/3″ sensor, a massive size upgrade from any other prosumer camera in that market. Check out this in-depth look at sensor sizes to see more on sensor sizes. The 4/3″ sensor is roughly 70% of the size of a film 35mm frame. Not bad.
Things to be truly excited about (as first mentioned by Philip Bloom).
- Low light shooting
- ND!
- PL- Mount (cine lenses and more!)
- Less Moire and Aliasing problems (when comparing to DSLR)
- Pro Audio inputs!
- Live Waveform and vectorscopes!
- SDI out (8-bit)
Bloom’s low light test…
The AG-AF100 is the first in what’s soon to become a long list of cameras offering professional features with large sensors putting cinematic quality into the hands of… well, everyone. Cinematic democracy continues.
Time to produce good content! Hollywood Studios are nervous, and they should be. Powerful tools are now available to the masses. Yet filmmakers must pursue worthwhile and smart content now more than ever, lest your film be lost in the incessant online swarm of Vimeo and Youtube uploads.
